主讲人简介

Prof.CHEN Gang(陳剛), born and bred in Hangzhou, is better known asGeorgeorKeoki. Having published 75 books, he is Full Professor of English and Translation Studies with Zhejiang University and Certified Senior Translator & Interpreter (as well as government-designated part-time interpreter for years). As one of the 23 national-classTour Guides Extraordinairein China and the only one in its top tourism province of Zhejiang, and as state-certified SOE manager of international service corporation and TOT/TTT, George’s first world travel-related career has enabled him to make a professional tour of many countries and regions including the USA, Canada, Middle East countries, European countries, and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, particularly of Southeast Asian countries on China’s first promotional tour in early 1990 for Chinese citizens’ future outbound tours.

Ranked among the first batch of professionals from “77-ers” specializing in guide-interpreting, tourism translation, vocational training, international tourism marketing and management, George began to take from the 1980s up to more than dozen kinds of pragmatic translation and of interpreting as well as multi-genre literary translation. He acted as both translator and interpreter (China’s side) for the UNWTO project, World Bank, McDonald’s franchise, SHA-HGH-NGB Expressway, prefeasibility report on five-star joint-venture hotel, international conferences on tourism and MICE, leaders at ministerial, provincial, and municipal levels. Meanwhile, he served as GSA of Zhejiang CTS (Holdings) Corporation in the States for China tour promotion in collaboration with UA & ANA while carrying out further studies and research on international tourism.

With a transferfrom international tourism to higher education via talent introduction in his Alma Mater Zhejiang University at the very beginning of the new millennium, George has established himself as the only professor of multiple designations /wearing multiple hats, and historically as the primary founder of translation discipline and the academic leader in translation studies. He is the first teacher offering courses of 30 different subjects for undergraduates & postgraduates in tourism English & translation and much more, the first ZJU professional trainer of interpreters and translators for the Yangtze Delta, the first director of the Institute of Translation Studies, the first supervisor of BTI/BA, MTI/MA & TS postgraduates in tourism translation (and others at ZJU), and the first academic leader of the team promoting China’s first professional doctorate degree program of DTT/DGI (Doctor of Tourism Translation/Guide-Interpreting Studies) that qualifies the holder to work in a specific profession in tourism (or to teach at the university level in the specific field of his/her degree). George’s rich working and study experience abroad plus his professional teaching and academic research at home have made him an eager writer and translator.

His published works feature a winning combination of professionalism, pragmatics and scholarship mainly in translation research, global tourism and cross-cultural studies. HisTourism Translation & Guide-InterpretingStudiesandSpecialized Translation for Tourismare known as the only national key book of its kind and the only coaching monograph in China respectively. Besides, he is the author of the English edition ofChina Travel Kit Series (Hangzhou & beyond),West Lake Poetics, andNew Greater Hangzhou;chief writer ofA Coursebook on EnglishDChinese Tourism Translation and the only writer of its fully upgraded and updated version,A Coursebook on English Guide-Interpreting,A Beginner’s Guide to Translation Studies,Multi-Genre Literary Translation, and the author ofHow to Prepare Translation Theses & Defense: A Professional Coaching Guide; chief editor, reviser & writer ofNew Century R & D Series on Translation Studies,including TS in news, law, business, movie, conference and exhibition;compiler ofRoyal Classic China Tour(USA & ANA); translator ofThe Unseen Peking Opera,A Trip to Mountains & Rivers in Zhejiang Province, co-translator ofThe Complete Illustrated Encyclopedia of Digital Photographyand one of the few official translators ofMacmillan Encyclopedia. On top of that, his more than 120 essays on overseas tour management, liaison-escort interpreting, cross-cultural interpreting, tourism translation, translation teaching, and translation theory can be found in either in-house literature or national and provincial academic publications and media with his first paper about tourism translation and guide-interpreting as well as China’s first such one published by the national journal ofChinese Translators Journalin 1987 and the same as above about the correct way to establish the professional degree programs in tourism translation and guide-interpreting studies from BTI, MTI to DTI, which was published byJournal of Foreign Languagesin 2017.

In addition, George has served as guestprofessor of XISU and of China’s first tourism vocational college & its tourism English education steering committee chair, while serving on the Expert Committee of Foreign Language Trans-writing in Public Services under the Ministry of Education and on the Expert Committee of English Trans-writing in Public Services of Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, he has been the head of the Expert Committee of English Trans-writing in Public Services of Zhejiang Province, vice president of Zhejiang Translators Association,(Comm Rev) peer evaluation expert of National Social Science Fund and Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, of MOE project & postgraduates’ these evaluation experts, and evaluation expert of doctoral theses of some of universities of C9’s and Project 985. Though in ZJU, George still remains active in advanced job training, helping the National Tourism Administration and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to train Advanced Tour Guides and Gold Badge Tourist Guides on a national and annual basis, and acting as chief judge of many professional guides’ contests…
